stories: baba yaga

I worked with a Year 2 class to recreate this forest scene from the Russian folktale, Baba  Yaga.

Firstly, the children prepared the papers that we would use to create the forest. In groups, the children were given either blue, green or brown paint to paint large sheets of plain wallpaper.

They then used my mark making tool kit (discarded items such as forks, chopsticks…even my granny’s old rollers!) to add interesting marks with another colour.  I showed each group images of different textures such as bark and grass to help inform their mark-making.

Children went on to draw and paint characters from the story, including some rather interesting forest creatures!

I created the final scene by cutting out the painted wallpaper to make the forest and then adding the characters.
